What is an Ad Valorem Tax?

Q. What is exactly an ad valorem tax?

A.   Ad valorem, is a Latin phrase that literally means, according to value. Ad valorem taxes are any taxes that are levied based on the county appraiser’s assessment of the property value. Under an ad valorem tax, people who own certain types of property are required to pay periodic taxes which represent a percentage of the assessed value of the property.  The most common form of this tax is the property tax which property owners are required to pay on real estate.

Should you not agree with the county appraiser’s assessed value of your property, you may appeal the assessed value at the county appraisal district office.
